The Contributory Parent (Subclass 173 & 143) visas enable the parents of a settled Australia citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia.

The Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 173 is a temporary visa which allows the parent to stay in Australia for 2 years. Whereas, the Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 is a permanent visa which allows the parent to live in Australia indefinitely.

The maximum period for Subclass 173 is two years. This visa cannot be extended or renewed. However, once the 2 years period is up, the parent can apply for the Subclass 143 visa which allows you to stay in Australia indefinitely as a permanent resident. The Subclass 143 visa can also be applied directly without first applying for a Subclass 173 visa.

Eligibility Criteria

Subclass 173 visa:

  • Have a sponsor: you would normally be sponsored by your child who is at least 18 years of age and is an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. However, if your child is under the age of 18 years, you can also be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organization.
  • Sponsor has been lawfully living in Australia for at least two years.
  • Must meet health and character requirements.
  • Must meet balance-of-family test: This means at least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or more of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country.

 Subclass 143 visa:

  • Have a sponsor.
  • Sponsor has been lawfully living in Australia for at least two years.
  • Meet health and character requirements.
  • Meet the balance-of-family test.
  • Have the assurance of support: An assurance of support assures the government you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa.
  • For a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa holders:
    1. Hold a Subclass 173 visa for two years
    2. Abide by all the criteria applicable to the Subclass 173 visa

  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years: after this period, you need a Resident Return (RRV) visa to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.
  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.

How to Apply

While you can apply for Subclass 173 from within Australia, you must be outside the country when your application is decided upon. With Subclass 143 vis), you can be in Australia when a decision is made on your application if:

  • You hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173).
  • You held a Tourist visa (subclass 676) or Visitor visa (subclass 600), which a Minister granted when you applied for this visa.
  • You are a family member of a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173) holder and you were in Australia when the application was submitted.
  • You hold a Bridging visa.
