Training Visa - (Subclass 407)
The Training Subclass 407 visa is a temporary visa granted for the purposes of undertaking occupational training to obtain registration, membership or licensing in Australia or overseas; to enhance occupational skills or for capacity building overseas.
This visa is not appropriate for people whose sole intention is to undertake work. It only allows to undertake occupational training with a sponsoring organisation.
The visa applicant must be sponsored by an approved Australian organisation.
An application for this visa can only be lodged online. The visa applicant can be in Australia or overseas at the time of lodgement of application. Family unit members can be included in the application.
Length Of The Visa
The maximum period for this visa is 2 years. However, a visa can be granted for a lesser period depending on the length of the training.
Visa Eligibility Criteria
You must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Be at least 18 (can be under 18 if exceptional circumstances apply)
- Have functional English
- Hold private health insurances
- Have access to sufficient funds to support themselves in Australia
- Have Genuine Intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the intended purpose
- Meet health and character requirements
Approved Nomination
To be eligible for the grant of a visa, a visa applicant is required to be the subject of an approved nomination. Your sponsoring organisation must lodge the nomination application. There are three types of Nomination which include:
- Nomination type 1 – Occupational training required for registration etc.
- Nomination type 2 – Occupational training to enhance skills
- Nomination type 3 – Occupational training for capacity building overseas

Occupational Trainees For Registration
For nomination type 1, the nomination application must satisfy that:
- The occupational training is necessary for the purposes of obtaining registration, membership or licensing in Australia or in the home country.
- The registration, membership or licensing is required for the nominee to be employed in the occupation in Australia or in the home country.
- The duration of the occupational training is necessary for the nominee to obtain registration, membership or licensing in Australia or in the home country.
- The occupational training is work-place based.
The nominee has the appropriate qualifications and/or experience to undertake the required training.
Occupational Training To Enhance Skills
For nomination type 2, the nomination application must satisfy that:
- The occupational training is a structured workplace-based training program specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee.
- The occupational training is in relation to a specified occupation.
- The nominee has the equivalent of at least 12 months full-time employment experience or study experience in the occupation to which the training relates in the 24 months immediately preceding the time of nomination.
Occupational Training For Capacity Building
The nomination type 3 includes the following subcategories:
1. Overseas qualification
– the nomination application in this category must satisfy that the nominee needs to complete 6 months of practical experience, research or observation to obtain a qualification from a foreign educational institution. The proposed training must be structured workplace-based training catered for the needs of the nominee.
2. Government support
– the nomination application in this category must satisfy that the structured workplace-based occupational training is supported by a government agency in Australia or the government in the home country of the nominee.
3. Professional development
– The training in this category is intended to cater for Australian organisations that develop tailored professional development programs and market these to overseas employers who wish their managerial or professional employees to gain additional skills consistent with the business of the overseas employer.
Approved Sponsor
The Australian organisation making the nomination application must be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor (TAS). We can assist your sponsoring organisation in getting TAS approval.
Family Members
You can include your family members in your visa application.
