Australian government has introduced three new visas, Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)), Subclass 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional)) visa and Subclass 191 (Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional)) visa.
Subclass 491 is a provisional visa which will commence on 16 November 2019 and replace the current subclass 489 visa.
Subclass 491 is a point-tested visa which will require a nomination from a State/Territory Government, or sponsorship by an eligible family member who is settled in a designated regional area. You must be invited before you can apply for this visa.
To be eligible, you must be less than 45 years of age and have competent English. A positive skills assessment in an occupation on an applicable occupation list is also a requirement for this visa. In good news, the applicants for this visa will be awarded additional points in certain areas upon submitting their expression of interest. Click here for more details
Subclass 494 is the second provisional visa which is due to commence on 16 November 2019. This visa will replace the current subclass 187 visa. This is an employer sponsored visa which requires approved nomination prior to the grant of a visa. You must be nominated by an employer who is an approved standard business sponsor for a position which exists in a designated regional area.
To be eligible, you must be less than 45 years of age and have competent English. A positive skills assessment in an occupation on an applicable occupation list is also a requirement for this visa. Additionally, you must have at least 3 years full-time work experience in your nominated occupation.
The duration of both subclass 491 and 494 visas is 5 years. However, the holders of these visas will be eligible to apply for permanent subclass 191 visa which will commence on 16 November 2022 after three years. Click here for more details
Subclass 191 is a permanent visa which will commence on 16 November 2022. Only Subclasses 491 and 494 visa holders will be eligible to apply for this visa. To be eligible you must have held the Subclass 491 or 494 for at least three years and substantially complied with the conditions of the visa. You must also meet the minimum threshold taxable income level (currently $53,990) for at least three years while holding the Subclass 491 or 494 (threshold to be specified by legislative instrument)
All areas excluding Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Perth will be designated as a regional area. The holders of 491 and 494 visas may live in any designated regional area and can move between designated regional areas.
